Prof. Samatar: Is He Building a Political Party or Supporting a Candidate?

Prof. Ahmed Ismail Samatar, a well-known intellectual and political figure, has become a central topic in Somaliland's political discourse. Initially, Samatar was a strong advocate for Somali unity. He even contested in Somalia's 2012 presidential election. However, after failing to secure the presidency, Samatar gradually shifted his focus toward Somaliland and its political landscape.
Recently, Samatar's actions have led many to question whether he is working solely to build his political organization, the Hillac Party, or if he is positioning himself to support another candidate, possibly from the ruling Kulmiye party. In his recent public addresses, Prof. Samatar has called for moderation and emphasized the need for political stability. His speeches have also addressed the importance of unity within Somaliland, urging youth movements to focus on constructive dialogue rather than agitation. This has drawn mixed reactions, with some seeing it as an attempt to pacify dissenting voices in favor of the status quo.
