On the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador @TayeAtske, held a productive meeting with China’s Foreign Minister, His Excellency Wang Yi. The discussion focused on key areas of cooperation between the two nations, including the implementation of tax-exempt market opportunities, ongoing peace and security issues in the Horn of Africa (HoA), and the enhancement of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, particularly in the context of #BRICS.

Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership between Ethiopia and China. The tax-exempt market opportunities are expected to foster stronger economic ties, benefiting both countries by facilitating smoother trade relations. This move aligns with the broader framework of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, under which Ethiopia plays a key role.

The meeting also covered current peace and security issues in the Horn of Africa, a region that has experienced significant challenges in recent years. Ethiopia, as a key player in the HoA, has been at the forefront of efforts to stabilize the region, and China’s continued support in these endeavors was highly appreciated. Minister Wang Yi reiterated China’s commitment to playing a constructive role in ensuring long-term peace and development in the area.

Furthermore, both countries emphasized the importance of deepening their cooperation within the BRICS framework, an alliance that aims to enhance collaboration among emerging economies. As Ethiopia continues to seek closer ties with the BRICS countries, discussions also touched on potential avenues for future collaboration on global governance reforms.
